Journal of Applied Disaster Research (JADR) is a new addition to the fledgling field of disaster science. This is an emerging area of study that cuts across disciplinary boundaries, and fosters a spirit of collaboration. Hence the journal istelf seeks to be a platform where the scientists, academicians, professional and students of all hues, but united in their passion to find solutions to thedisasters and their multifarious manifestations, could come to a common ground. The journal has its origins in the Disaster, Risk and Vulnerability Conference DRVC 2011 which was hosted by the School of EnvironmentalSciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, India (CHAERT) and the subsequent formation of the CHAERT: Charitable Society for Humanitarian Assistance and Emergency Response Training. The vision of CHAERT is to build a safer and disaster resilient community by developing a holistic, proactive, multidisaster andtechnology driven strategy for Disaster Management. This it seeks to achieve through a systematic approach with a culture of prevention, mitigation and preparedness to reduce the impact of disasters on people and thus enhancing the community's selfhelp mechanisms. The aim of the conference, the CHAERT as well as of this publication is to provide an arena for researchers and professionals in diverse specializations to come together with their publications in an area of common interest, viz, Disaster Research. The scope of this publication ranges from the sociology and psychology of disasters to mathematical modelling, risk and vulnerability estimates toprediction of largescale disasters. It spans the pure sciences, engineering and the social sciences. Authors are hence encouraged to publish their Applied Disaster Research work in this journal. The thematic areas that wouldbe addressed are (but not limited to): (1) Disaster Management and Public Administration (2) Disaster Research and Practices (3) Community Approaches in Disaster Management (4) Interdisciplinary approaches in Disaster Management (5) Emergency Medicine and Management (6) Geology and Disasters (7) Fire and Rescue Operations (8) Adaptive Strategies (9) Engineering Disaster Mitigation and Management (10) Disaster Education and Knowledge Management (11) Spatial technologies in Disaster Management (12) Hazard Risk & Vulnerability Analysis Natural/Financial (13) Statistics of Risk Analysis.
