CHAERT At a glance
CHAERT (Charitable society for Humanitarian Assistance and Emergency Response Training) is a venture of Masters Degree holders in Disaster Management, from the School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, as a result of the augmented need of an institutional support to strengthen the disaster management and humanitarian assistance activities of the state.
Our vision is to build a safer and disaster resilient community by developing a holistic, proactive, multi-disaster and technology driven strategy for DM. This will be achieved through a systematic approach in disaster management by building a culture of prevention, mitigation and preparedness to reduce the impact of disasters on people and thus enhancing the communities self help mechanisms.
We accentuate in developing and maintaining a structured platform to facilitate collaborative education, training and research in the current and emerging fields of Disaster Management by extending a helping hand towards the vulnerable community with other humanitarian agencies and administration to ensure minimum standards of living in normal as well as emergency situations and thus reduce the human sufferings arising from both natural and anthropogenic disasters.

JOURNAL
Journal of Applied Disaster Research
Journal of Applied Disaster Research (JADR) is a new addition to the fledgling field of disaster science. This is an emerging area of study that cuts across disciplinary boundaries, and fosters a spirit of collaboration. Hence the journal itself seeks to be a platform where the scientists, academicians, professional and students of all hues, but united in their passion to find solutions to the disasters and their multifarious manifestations, could come to a common ground. The journal has its origins in the Disaster, Risk and Vulnerability Conference DRVC 2011 which was hosted by the School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, India (CHAERT) and the subsequent formation of the CHAERT: Charitable Society for Humanitarian Assistance and Emergency Response Training. The vision of CHAERT is to build a safer and disaster resilient community by developing a holistic, proactive, multi-disaster and technology driven strategy for Disaster Management. This it seeks to achieve through a systematic approach with a culture of prevention, mitigation and preparedness to reduce the impact of disasters on people and thus enhancing the community’s self-help mechanisms. The aim of the conference, the CHAERT as well as of this publication is to provide an arena for researchers and professionals in diverse specializations to come together with their publications in an area of common interest, viz, Disaster Research. The scope of this publication ranges from the sociology and psychology of disasters to mathematical modelling, risk and vulnerability estimates to prediction of largescale disasters. It spans the pure sciences, engineering and the social sciences. Authors are hence encouraged to publish their Applied Disaster Research work in this journal. The thematic areas that would be addressed are (but not limited to): (1) Disaster Management and Public Administration (2) Disaster Research and Practices (3) Community Approaches in Disaster Management (4) Interdisciplinary approaches in Disaster Management (5) Emergency Medicine and Management (6) Geology and Disasters (7) Fire and Rescue Operations (8) Adaptive Strategies (9) Engineering Disaster Mitigation and Management (10) Disaster Education and Knowledge Management (11) Spatial technologies in Disaster Management (12) Hazard Risk & Vulnerability Analysis Natural/Financial (13) Statistics of Risk Analysis.
JADR adheres to international standards in publishing and uses the latest technologies and high-quality graphics, ensuring that authors get crisp and high-quality papers matching their painstaking research efforts. New research articles, review articles, rapid communications on topical events and occasional conference reviews will make up the journal content. Book reviews can be undertaken provided authors or publishers submit a request along with two copies of the book/conference proceedings volume to the Chief Editor. All papers are peer reviewed and review papers are only through invitation. Separate high-quality figures need to be supplied only when the paper is accepted for publication. In the initial stages, the figures should be of the lowest resolution, so that email transmission to reviewers is not hindered. Full length research papers should be within 10000 words. Four or five keywords should also be supplied. Abstract should be within 500 words and should not contain references. Figures and tables should be supplied separately and not inserted into the text of the paper, but their positions should be indicated within the text. No footnotes are allowed in the papers. Complete author affiliation should be given, including PIN/ZIP codes, and email address. All references should be cited and vice versa. Manuscripts should be emailed to jadr.journal@gmail.com. Journal of Applied Disaster Research is open access, meaning that no copyright transfer to the publisher is needed. Authors are free to copy, distribute, reproduce all and any article that appears in the journal and the publisher will make available printed copies of the journal if the author wishes to have hard copies.
